The Hotel
Opened in 1928, the Four Seasons George V is regularly voted best hotel in France by Zagat's, World’s Best Hotels, and all of the major travel magazines. Obviously everyone has their own criteria of what constitutes a great hotel, and in Paris the George V competes with the other historic palace hotels such as Le Bristol, the Ritz, the Crillon, Plaza Athénée and Le Meurice. I’d choose the George V based on their amazing spa, excellent afternoon tea served in La Galerie, and the dedicated, professional and friendly service.
Art Deco details, 17th-century tapestries, gilded bas reliefs, marble floors, and crystal chandeliers typical of many palace hotels can be found here, however it never feels frumpishly old-fashioned nor overly trendy. The most striking thing about the hotel are the dramatic floral designs by the American artistic director (Jeff Leatham), as shown in the Marble Courtyard garden (shown here in winter).
Rooms
There are 184 enormous rooms and 61 suites, popular with American travelers and their oversized luggage, with Louis XVI trimmings, crystal chandeliers, DVD players, ethernet and WiFi high speed Internet, and French books. Bathrooms are marble, with deep soaking tub and shower. Obviously all of the standard amenities, room service, safe, mini-bar, and housekeeping twice daily.
Spa
The low-lit spa and fitness center are my favorite in Paris, with 11 treatment rooms, walls covered in Toile de Jouy fabrics, and an indoor swimming pool surrounded by a fresco evoking Marie-Antoinette's Versailles. A relaxation room (equipped with curtained loungers, stereos and headphones to fully escape) is available for guests who arrive before their rooms are ready. The couple's VIP treatment room features a private jacuzzi and sauna.
Business Center
The business center is decorated in Empire style, with Toile de Jouy fabric wall coverings, there are six workstations (four in separate cubicles, two that can be closed off with a door for privacy), with computer, printer, Internet, and phone. It's free for all guests and is open 8am until 9pm with a full-time staff member for help with deliveries, photocopies, faxes, etc.
Drinking & Dining
Dining options include drinks and light meals at the George V Bar (amazing cocktail selection), afternoon tea or meals at La Galerie facing the courtyard garden (the best tarte tatin in Paris), and haute cuisine at Le Cinq (book well in advance!).
Services
The service at the George V is among the best in France. Staff are polite, dedicated, professional, yet friendly. The George V is particularly family-friendly, with special programs for kids and teens.
Neighborhood
The George V is on one of the couture shopping streets just off the Avenue des Champs Elysées. It is surrounded by world-class shopping, dining, cinemas, nightclubs, cabarets and and sightseeing.
Internet rates start at €750 for a standard room.
